Little Buddha

Gansu, 2006

In Xiahe's Labrang Monastery in Western China, about two thousand monks live and study Tibetan Buddhism from their childhood. The splendid monastery complex, founded in 1709, is the largest of its kind outside Tibet, one of the three most important homesteads of the Gelug or Yellow Hat sect, and the unrivaled center of Tibetan culture in North-West China. Despite or because of the seclusion of monasticism in the highlands of China's Gansu province, the young (as well as older) scholars are showing an almost child-like curiosity, friendliness and openness towards visitors from the outside world, and their ways of life.
